Drama

At Blundell’s Prep Drama is so much more than performing in a play. It allows children the chance to explore, develop and exercise their imagination. Drama gives children the opportunity to build self-confidence and to learn self-discipline.

The drama curriculum encourages each child to explore and develop their own imagination through a carefully planned skills programme which allows for improvisation and innovation from every child. The learning experience is fun and exciting as the children partake in a multitude of activities that not only strengthens their acting and performance skills but helps with confidence and teamwork.

In the Pre-Prep, Drama is incorporated in academic lessons. There are opportunities for our youngest students to perform each year in nativities and showcases to parents.

All children in the Prep have a Drama lesson every week taught by a specialist teacher. Children in KS2 can also opt to have 1-1 Speech and Drama lessons to explore the art further and work towards examinations.

Annually, our Year 3's perform a version of The Nativity supported by Year 4's as their choir. Our Year 5's put on a mini-musical or play at the end of the Autumn Term and Year 6's perform a musical in the summer term in the Ondaatje Theatre.

Aims of the Drama Department

  • To provide a chance to stimulate, exercise and stretch the imagination.
  • To encourage speaking and listening as a two-way co-operative process and life skill.
  • To learn self-discipline and an understanding of others.
  • To help to make sense of life-experiences as a valuable preparation for the future.
  • To give opportunities to perform and to watch live theatre.
  • To support areas of the academic curriculum by integrating drama through cross-curricular links.
