Geography

The world is an exciting and fascinating place for inquisitive children. The aim of our Geography teaching at Blundell’s Preparatory School is to bring this world to life, in every sense, for each and every one of our pupils.

We are extremely fortunate to be geographically placed in an exceptionally beautiful and varied part of the world. Our school is immediately surrounded by green fields, woods and rivers, we are also within very close proximity to towns, a city, a historical canal and a great many more interesting places to visit, as well as the huge resource of neighbouring Exmoor.

Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom to provide children with extensive opportunities to use geographical skills and resources such as maps, atlases, aerial photographs and ICT, to answer their many questions. We incorporate many school trips into our geography teaching such as ‘Out and About in Tiverton’, river field studies, local farm visits, guided walks on Exmoor, pond dipping on the canal, exploring Coasts and Coastlines, the effect that traffic has on out environment, as well as tremendous cross curricular links with our Outdoor Learning Programme as well as exciting residential trips in the Summer Term.

We encourage all of our children to question, investigate, debate and explore in a world where conservation, environmental and economic issues are a relevant part of their everyday life. Our lessons explore the relationship between the earth and its peoples through carefully monitored progression and structure.

Learning through Geography helps us all to be more socially and environmentally sensitive, informed and responsible citizens.

Aims of the Geography department

  • To encounter different societies and cultures.
  • To help children realise how nations rely on each other.
  • To encourage children to think about their own place in the world, their values and their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment.
  • To stimulate and answer questions about the natural and human world, using different scales of enquiry to view them from different perspectives.
  • To create a sense of awe and wonder about the world they live in.
  • To develop knowledge of places and environments throughout the world including understanding of maps.
  • To assist with a range of investigative and problem solving skills both inside and outside of the classroom.

The curriculum is enhanced by local trips to museums, rivers and the nearby towns and villages.
